Mustangs of Carrot Island

Situated along the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, Carrot Island is a wild horse photographer’s dream come true. The predictability of this population in regards to feeding grounds and behavior is unparalleled for wild horses along the Western Atlantic coast. What this translates to is the ability to plan ahead and be prepared for what will transpire.

Carrot Island provides us with a dynamic setting for photographing these horses. With the rising of the tide, as the water begins its journey across the massive expanses of salt flats, we will be afforded a truly unique opportunity to photograph wild horses in scenarios found no where else in North America.

As part of the Rachel Carson Estuarine Preserve, Carrot Island is a jewel in the litany of protected islands along the Crystal Coast. Wild horses, oystercatchers, piping plovers, dolphins, loggerhead sea turtles, black skimmers, you name it – this place has it. So while the prime directive is indeed photographing the mustangs of Carrot Island, don’t be surprised if you end up with a few gigs worth of images of other wildlife as well.

The Mustangs of Carrot Island is part of Outer Banks Expeditions’ Wild Horse Photography Workshop Series.

This particular workshop is a one day event and includes snacks, beverages, lunch, and all transportation requiring boats.

Price: $250

Due to the popularity of this photography trip, I will now be offering this tour throughout the spring, summer, and fall of 2011. This workshop will now be available upon request in all seasons except for winter so as to cater to the demand. This really is one cool place!
