The coast of North Carolina is saturated with the history of Europe’s first contact with North America. From England’s failed attempts at colonization to Spanish conquistadors, the barrier islands of this coast are rich with both story and mystery.
The wild horses that inhabit the barrier islands of this state are a testament to such a history. With windswept white sandy beaches, towering sand dunes, and the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop, participants of this workshop will be afforded the opportunity to photograph three distinct populations of wild horses in landscapes unlike any other.

Included in price is all lodging, all three meals while in Carova Beach, transportation throughout the off-road portion, drinks, snacks, and coffee, boat and ferry fees. The wine at the end of the trip will also be provided. You are only responsible for meals while in Morehead City.

This wild horse photography workshop will begin in Corolla, North Carolina where we will meet for dinner and then load our gear to be transported up into the off-road section of the Outer Banks. Known as Carova Beach, this town which is seemingly frozen in time, sits nestled along the north end of the Outer Banks where roads are a distant memory and wild horses still roam the sand trails. We will be staying in a beach cottage where these horses regularly frequent.
The first morning of the trip we will awaken to a predawn breakfast from which we will depart just before sunrise. Driving out to the beach will set up for sunrise photographs and begin our search for the wild horses. A break for lunch will be made once the light begins to become too harsh and dinner will be held at the cottage after the afternoon shoot.
The following morning we will pack our gear and head south to catch the ferries that will transport us down to our next destination. This is a long day with quite a bit of traveling. We will arrive in Morehead City, North Carolina that afternoon and check into the hotel. Afterward we will take a boat out to Carrot Island to photograph this second population until sunset. Dinner will be in Morehead City.
The next morning we will head out to Shackleford Banks by boat to photograph the horse feeding in the marsh and navigating the oyster bars that make up much of the area. This part of the trip is dependent on the tides and therefore we may decide to spend a couple hours in the morning at Carrot Island if we need to wait on the wind and tides to cooperate. At Shackleford we will be photographing both from the boat as well as wading into the water for some truly unique perspectives.
Lunch will be had either on the island if the light remains good or in Beaufort where we can pull our boat right up to the restaurant. The afternoon shoot will bring us back to the Shackleford Banks to photograph both the horses and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Dinner will be in Morehead City with a celebratory bottle of wine to close the trip.
The following morning we will check out of the hotel and depart for home.
